Everything is Mission
We read and sing and study the Scriptures, and we find that in the Bible, God sends his people on mission. If we are listening to God, we will go into our community to love and serve its people. In Isaiah, the prophet writes: Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow. We cannot claim to love God, if we don't love people and the community we are planted in.
The Fifth Sunday
Every time there is a fifth Sunday in a month (about once a quarter), Hopesprings leaves the building. We gather in the community, to creatively love and serve people in tangible ways. We have served meals to friends who are living on the street, taken our gathering on the road to other venues where people who can't make it to a gathering are, and given gift cards to people in the neighborhood to a grocery store.
Opportunities Unlimited is an organization serving people with traumatic brain injuries. Many of our friends at OU want to grow spiritually and be involved with a church, but cannot make it because of their injuries. We spend time every week at OU, building relationships with people as we share some music and our time with our friends there. We have also met at the community center at OU for our Sunday morning gathering, bringing music, a time in God's word, and a meal to share together.
The Warming Shelter
The Warming Shelter serves people in Sioux City who do not have a place to live. We have spent time loving and serving the people who stay at the warming shelter, taking meals, and helping set up the space to serve more people. We look forward to continuing and expanding our relationships with the folks staying at the Warming Shelter.
The Crittenton Center has a building that houses kids in transition. Kids who cannot be with their parents, or who are heading into the foster care system. We spend time there, making friendships with the staff and children there, and doing what we can to help them through difficult times and transitions.
Just Getting Started
The places we are serving as an organization are beautiful expressions of how God is sending us to love and serve our city, but we are just getting started.
